External Linemarking
There are 3 main product types on the market that are available to clients and specifiers. Each one has distinct advantages and disadvantages dependent on the intended use, location, and surface type and traffic expectations. Each type can also be broken down into sub-categories which are outlined below.

The 3 main types are:
Hot Applied Thermoplastic
Traffic Paint
Pre-formed Thermoplastic
An explanation of each type is given below along with recommended uses.
Line Marking Paint. Used for concrete, block paving as well as all other surfaces outdoors. Available in a wide range of colours and easily made up for special colours.
Chlorinated rubber − Solvent base paint applied in one or two coats by airless spray equipment or by roller or brush, Very good adhesion to concrete, fast curing 15 mins @ 20°C
Epoxy paint − Solvent base paint either one or two pack types and applied in one or two coats. Very good adhesion to concrete, Applied by airless spray equipment or by roller or brush. Curing from 15 mins to 6 Hours @ 20°C product selection depending.
Water-based epoxy Paint − Water Dispersible epoxy coating, environmentally friendly, containing NO solvents & being of a very low odour during application. Very good adhesion to concrete, also can be over coated many times, excellent durability. Curing 24 hours @ 20°C
Advantages: Traffic paints adhere very well to concrete and block paving.
Disadvantages: Slower drying schedule. Can only be applied to Tarmac over 6 months old
Hot Applied Thermoplastic. Principal colours are white and yellow but others such as blue, red, black and green are available. White material usually includes glass beads in the mixture to give night time reflectivity and additional glass bead application to the surface can be specified. Adheres to bitumen surface by heat transfer bonding.
Application Methods: Screed, Spray or Extrusion equipment by specialist contractors only.
Suitable for: Outdoor use only on bitumen based surfaces such as asphalt, surface dressing, slurry, tarmac etc.
Can be used on concrete and block paving with care but more likely to fail.
Not suitable for: Indoor surfaces, factory floors, underground car parks, indoor multi-storey car parks. Thermoplastic requires the action of weather (rain) to maintain good appearance and if used indoors or under cover is likely to discolour badly.
Advantages: Fast drying schedule
Disadvantages: Does not adhere well to concrete and block paving.
Pre-formed Thermoplastic. Comes to user in ready-made form. Pre-cut logos and designs are factory made. Use and wear characteristics are as per Hot applied Thermoplastic above. Ideal for prestige locations, complex logo designs and multi-colour usage. Applied by hand and gas torch. Curing 5 mins @ 20°C.
